fake attempted suicide scenario
The student, Anna Odell, created an elaborate fake attempted suicide scenario which saw her being eventually taken to a psychiatric ward. According to the St Goran’s hospital, Odell put up a fair old struggle as it took 8 hospital staff to restrain her.
Odell found her way up bridge and started screaming out that she was going to take her life by jumping off it. Witnesses around scrambled to contact the authorities who apparently could barely control the supposedly frantic woman.
The FF/REW represents the desires of a self-destructive, vulnerable anonymous young female. Semper has chosen to play the ‘natural’ feminine role and in particular a mythology of ‘girlhood’. The video shows the girl in the white, laced flowing dress against a Beethoven soundtrack; the iconography of the 19th century romanticism. She is a romantic representation of an ‘ideal’ woman as in James Whistler’s The White Lady (about 1865) or Alexandre Dumas’ The Lady with the Camellias (1889). In the girl’s image, there is a struggle between her childish appearance and her surprisingly serious behaviour.

Mathilde
[videoinstallation] Mathilde, Mathilde… (2000), Suicide Bomb (2000), Small things end, great things endure (2002)
The focus in Mathilde ter Heijne work Mathilde, Mathilde is the classical theme of love-death, as portrayed in countless literary, stage and film adaptations, in Suicide Bomb ter Heijne examines the phenomena of self-induced death, interpretable as a political act. In contrast, in Small things end, great things endure sacrificial death by burning as martyrdom and self-sacrifice for atonement is in the foreground – both variations which in fine arts are seldom a central theme in this fictitious form. But time and again, Mathilde ter Heijne’s oeuvre deals with the reflection of pictures in the media of refugees, demonstrators fighting for their rights or victims of war. In the production of her videos, the artist is not only director and producer, but often takes the double role of actress, whose alter ego is shown as a life-sized doll.
All three films are film-text collages. The text passages that form the basis resonate in a calm reading only from the sound track. The produced images with the spoken text yield the contextual environment, the background transparency for ter Heijne’s works. The instruction for reading the intention becomes a formal-aesthetic aspect of the entire film. The artistic declaration is achieved not only through the implementation of the image idea, but decidedly through the selection of the text. More info

Art and the fake of a suicide
As a part of her final project before graduation, Anna Odell pretended she was going to jump off a bridge to commit suicide. Horrified witnesses called police, who then tried to restrain the kicking and screaming Odell.

The two arguments that her professors and teachers at Konstfack brings forth in DN, 1. that the action should be compared to journalistic methods like Wallraff and thus seen in the light of biopolitics and cultural critique and 2. the work is not yet finished, thus nothing should yet be stated about the means for the upcoming end.
